Perhaps I’m on my own here, but I love bonus content on DVDs. The commentaries, the deleted scenes, all of it just makes me love the movie even more, and yes, I’m one of those people who is willing to shell out extra money for the deluxe edition of a DVD. But I have plenty of friends that just rent movies, and yes, they too enjoy bonus features. But that’s going to change pretty soon, if Fox has anything to say. The company is removing bonus features from DVD rentals, so you get a movie and if you wanted anything else, I guess you’ll have to buy the DVD. I take it as a new way to battle piracy, even though most people only download the movie itself. But it does raise a question of why. Yes, we know that you’re trying to make the DVD purchase experience more “purchase worthy” but aren’t you also screwing the fan base that just wants to enjoy a movie once, and maybe listen to some commentary on why a scene was made the way it was.
